Andrew David Frankel (Education) The CGII grant will support the final stage of my dissertation research, which entails examines how Tibetan communities on the margins of the Sinosphere use supplemental education programs to navigate Chinese hegemony exerted through mainstream schooling. Whereas the first case study explored how Amdo Tibetan educators in Qinghai Province (PRC) reinforce but also transcend (and thereby resist) the norms and knowledges promulgated through compulsory education, the second case will examine Tibetan educational programs in Taiwan (ROC) and the different educational goals that can be facilitated (or hindered) by different sociopolitical circumstances, thus responding to theoretical questions pertinent in the sociology and philosophy of education.
