Sample Day, a New Commission for the Daxophone

Fall 2023 GGR Recipient

Daniel Fishkin (Music)

The daxophone is a carved hardwood strip played with a bow. The instrument’s sound, somewhere between a cello and badger, ranges from furtive gurgles to wild screams. Daniel Fishkin has been is the only Luthier to have studied with its inventor, Hans Reichel. Since 2017, he has been commissioned by over 65 musicians to create personalized daxophone setups. For his GGR Grant, Fishkin will travel to Italy to begin Sample Day, a new kind of commission for the daxophone. Rather than build an instrument from wood, he will build a digital library of daxophone samples and sounds that can be utilized by leading American and European composers of sample-based music and hip-hop.
