Concerted efforts to study China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) at the University began with the major conference, “Complementing and Competing Visions of China’s Belt and Road Initiative,” held on March 2, 2019.

We propose to convene in 2024 an international gathering of scholars and practitioners working across different disciplines in the Amazonian and Andean regions.

Environmental conditions affect multiple stages in the spread of infectious disease.

Yen-Yu Lin’s dissertation project, Colors of the Empire: Visual Representations of Race and Gender in Colonial Taiwan, examines the racialized and gendered “rule of difference” through material culture with an empirical focus on Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945).

Cherrie Kwok will focus on advancing her dissertation project about the relationship between anti-imperialism and a late nineteenth-century artistic and literary style named Decadence.

The project takes the Spanish Civil War as a site of confluence between Spain’s internal history, its imperial past in Latin America and Africa, Black international anti-imperialism, and Cuban communism, among other socio-historical configurations.

I seek to reconstruct the links between the Catholic Church and Chile’s socialist revolution through a targeted study of the Vicuña Mackenna industrial zone located in southeastern Santiago.

This grant will support activities related to an ongoing research project in Tanzania, which explores the concepts of dignity and heritage in Maasai lifeworlds, in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and similar target-based policy initiatives.

I will research ideophones and interjections used in speech practices in Zapotec wedding rituals.

This project seeks to establish an eco-cultural study of the Ecological Park of the Ceiba Tree of Vieques, Puerto Rico.
