This project seeks to better understand the history and formal qualities of the form as a means of offering the groundwork for a transcultural artistic project: writing milongas in English.

My project examines the experience of “Afro-Turks” in the late Ottoman and early Turkish republican periods. This project will frame these experiences within the context of race, migration, displacement, and the formation of nation-states in the wake of WWI.

This grant supports the creation of a collaborative working group to foster interdisciplinary conversation among UVA faculty working on West Africa.

This study explores the relationship between Britain’s abolition of slavery in its Caribbean colonies (1838) and its instigation of the First Opium War with China (1839).

The book project, “Capitals in the Margins: South Asia Since Partition” seeks to answer why, despite the shared experience of colonial British rule and a shared investment in anticolonial nationalist movements, South Asia remains the least integrated region in the world.

How did British colonial efforts to expand “commodity frontiers” come to shape environmental changes on one hand and contestations over belonging, citizenship and territory on the other in South Asia?

My project explores Martin Luther King Jr’s highly publicized visit to both East and West Berlin. King arrived in September 1964, only a few months after the passage of the Civil Rights Act and just before he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Outcomes include a suite of new practices, an open access Generative Contemplation Toolkit, and launch of the Contemplative Design Lab at UVA.

I plan to do a historical analysis of the convict labor used by the British East India Company in the early nineteenth century in their newly acquired territory in the North Western Provinces of British India.

Many occupier governments seek to permanently integrate occupied territories into their national borders.
