My work focuses on the transnational peace movement during the last decade of the Cold War. CGII’s generous funding will help me access the Swarthmore Peace Collection, which will allow me to shed light on grassroots peace activism in 1980s America that often transcended national borders, and to trace the rise of civil society and its impact on policy-makers and diplomats in a moment of profound social and geopolitical change. I will also re-evaluate the years 1989-91 as an incision in modern history by examining continuities across the end of this global conflict that hold important repercussions for the present.
