Where did Britain look for its future as the British Empire came to an end in the twentieth century? The usual answer—the European Economic Community, which Britain joined in 1973—misses a much longer and more complex story about British involvement in Europe, including entanglements with fascism, as well as the search for alternative imperial spaces from island territories like Hong Kong, to the North and South Poles, to outer space. Explaining the recent resurgence of British nationalism through the promises and disappointments of global visions, Futurelands argues that the imagined future is always a place as well as a point in time.
