Early Literacy Instruction at a Malawian Primary School

This qualitative case study will investigate early literacy instruction at a primary school in rural Malawi. Through document analysis of curriculum materials and lesson plans, interviews with teachers, and classroom observations, I will research the instructional practices and materials used to teach reading in Standard 1 and 2 classes. I will also investigate how teachers make their instructional decisions and how they overcome challenges in their classrooms. The results will be used to make recommendations for reading pedagogy that both aligns with research and is appropriate for the local context, and success stories from Malawian classrooms will be highlighted.
