Diving into Uncharted Waters is an ethnographic research project exploring multicultural and transnational encounters at Freibad, public outdoor swimming pool, in Berlin. The study aims to illuminate the embodied and emotional dimensions of racial, ethnic, and religious transformations in contemporary Germany. It specifically focuses on the experiences of migrants from Turkey, as well as refugees and asylum seekers from the broader Middle East. Over the past decade, Germany has become a key destination for individuals fleeing conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan. My research reveals that these groups not only comprise a diverse clientele but also form a vulnerable and often precarious workforce within the pool facilities.
