Decolonial Imaginations in the Spanish Civil War: Francoism as Colonialism
- Daniel Doncel (Spanish, Italian and Portuguese)
The project takes the Spanish Civil War as a site of confluence between Spain’s internal history, its imperial past in Latin America and Africa, Black international anti-imperialism, and Cuban communism, among other socio-historical configurations. It shifts the focus from the European point of view to the anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, and anti-racist global south subjects involved in the Spanish Civil War. By linking Spain’s political history to the militant anti-imperialist history of the global south, the project intervenes into conversations about decolonial histories, transcontinental and transhemispheric political movements, and the configurations of global south subjectivities during the twentieth century.
