Frameworks of Community: Queer Art Activism in the Southern Cone

This project investigates how queer artist networks in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil) grappled with political strife and the AIDS epidemic through art, collaboration, and activism. In the late twentieth century, these countries suffered under oppressive military regimes when the HIV/AIDS epidemic struck the globe in the 1980’s. Queer artists often turned to collaboration and community for safety, strength, and support. Through archival research in Montevideo, I seek to contextualize the understudied Uruguayan queer context with its neighbors in Argentina and Brazil in order to understand how these queer artist communities responded to political and social turmoil.
