Contested Landscapes: Archaeological and Architectural Legacies of Conflict in the Balkans
This project explores the contested landscapes of Thrace, a historic borderland spanning Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey, through interdisciplinary workshops in Istanbul, Sofia, and Athens, and field research along the Greece-Bulgaria frontier. Focusing on fortifications, settlements, and religious sites shaped by conflict, migration, and political transformation, the study uncovers the material legacies of shifting power and resilience. International collaboration among archaeologists, historians, and digital humanities experts will develop new models for cross-border research, while GIS mapping and 3D modeling will digitally record endangered heritage. The project advances global dialogues on cultural preservation and strengthens transnational academic networks.
