Towards Critical Philology: Sketch for a Self-analysis of a Profession

Spring 2025 GIG Recipient

Towards Critical Philology: Sketch for a Self-analysis of a Profession is a research initiative that seeks to reconnect the discipline with ideology and politics. Our work approaches philology reflexively as critical knowledge, aiming to disrupt the invisible mechanisms that perpetuate structures of domination or impose seemingly objective —scientific—values of truth.

Our multidisciplinary group engages with literate knowledge by bringing philology into dialogue with intellectual and conceptual history, sociology of knowledge, cultural studies, anthropology, and political science. This historiographical project moves beyond traditional area studies, encompassing regions where Spanish is or has been spoken—including the Americas, Spain, the Philippines, and Equatorial Guinea—while fostering conversations with cultural traditions of languages in contact.
