Tangential Timber: Non-linear Wood Masonry
- Kyle Schumann (Architecture)
- Katie MacDonald (Architecture)
This project seeks to develop and pilot a construction application for non-linear wood through the development of a computational construction workflow in which logs are robotically scanned and manufactured into interlocking, structural blocks. The project addresses resource scarcity and embodied carbon, focusing on non-linear wood as a global material limited in application due to conventional fabrication strategies. The research will be performed by a faculty and student-researcher team in the School of Architecture, using waste wood from Grounds in collaboration with UVA Sawmilling. This effort will culminate in the exhibition of a built prototype installation at a public institution and publication.
