Place-Making: A Workshop on UVa-Indigenous Relations
2019 Grant Recipient
Research by:
- David Edmunds (Global Development Studies)
This workshop invites academics, indigenous leaders, and activists to reflect on the current state of UVa/indigenous relations, and to imagine new possibilities. We will look at the university’s role in the transformation of built environments and landscapes, and explore how the arts, language and relations with the other-than-human affect indigenous place-making. We will look at threats to indigenous flourishing, particularly extractive industry development, tourism and industrial agriculture. We will explore ways to support indigenous organizing against these threats, as well as the elaboration of indigenous-inspired alternative approaches to living in the world.
