Gratitude is the feeling of thankfulness for others’ goodwill, and it is vital to human connection and well-being. Yet most research on gratitude comes from Western contexts. This international collaboration examines how children and parents in the U.S. (primarily Charlottesville) and India (Bengaluru, South India) understand and express gratitude. Focusing on middle-class families, the study interviews school-age children and surveys parents about their gratitude experiences and socialization practices. By comparing how cultural values shape gratitude and reciprocity, the project advances a global understanding of the development of gratitude and the social forces that nurture it across generations.
