This project explores the evolving concept of authenticity in UNESCO World Heritage preservation, focusing on China’s approach, especially its adoption and appropriation. This research addresses knowledge gaps by comparing Western and Chinese preservation ideologies, examining China’s interpretation of authenticity, and providing empirical insights. Through archival research and interviews in Beijing and Shanghai, the project will engage with preservation experts to analyze policy development and case studies of waterfront towns near Shanghai. This study seeks to contribute to the discourse on China's engagement with global heritage frameworks and the adaptation of preservation practices.
