This project is a comparative ethnographic study of gender-based community care programs and their impact on LGBTQ elderly in a non-Western context. Specifically, it aims to investigate three unique initiatives meant to create much-needed spaces of elderly care for transgender women in Indonesia in what effectively constitutes a care void: an elderly care home that caters exclusively to transgender women in Jakarta, Java; the world’s first and only Islamic boarding school (pesantren) founded by and for transgender women in Yogyakarta, Java; and a specialized care program for Bali's now aging HIV-positive gay and transgender population in Denpasar, Bali.
