Rethinking Nationalism in Contemporary Spain

Alison Posey, PhD Candidate (Spanish, Italian and Portuguese)

As a PhD student in the Department of Spanish, my research focuses on literary engagements with nationalism, populism, and terrorism in the emerging field of Basque Studies, and my dissertation project deals with the representation of Basque nationalist politics in the works of twentieth- and twenty-first-century authors. My current aim is to expand Basque Studies beyond its present boundaries and bring Basque Studies to UVa. With this grant from CGII, I will be visiting the Archive of Basque Nationalism at the Sabino Arana Foundation in Bilbao, Spain for one month in summer 2019, where I will examine representations of nationalistic terrorism in Basque-Spanish literature.
