Imagine a future where education and health systems across sub-Saharan Africa are equipped with tools that allow for early and accurate diagnosis, where patient care is guided by reliable patient-reported data, and where educational interventions are tailored to the needs of students. That future is possible—but only if clinicians, researchers, and educators have assessment tools that provide good data. In much of sub-Saharan Africa, efforts to improve clinical and educational outcomes are undermined by the lack of high-quality, culturally relevant assessments to guide decision-making. Under this proposal, UVA’s new office in Cape Town, South Africa will serve as ground zero for addressing this challenge, with our African partners at University of the Western Cape (UWC) serving as equal partners. The ultimate goal of the research is to provide the foundation for an African-led assessment center serving all of sub-Saharan Africa.
