This project supports oral history fieldwork in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to advance a book manuscript on education, politics, and propaganda during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle (1965–80). The research centers on the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and its Political Commissariat, examining how education was mobilized as a tool of war and shaped political consciousness among combatants. The fieldwork will capture testimonies from aging veterans whose memories constitute an irreplaceable archive of Cold War-era African history. A related project on African spirituality within ZAPU will also benefit from this trip. Findings will contribute to African history, comparative education, Cold War history and liberation studies.
