Imperialism’s Materiality in Daily Life: An archaeology of late pre-Columbian Mairana, Bolivia

Project Summary: This archaeological project explores the ways that the activities of daily life were entangled with the broader socio-political environment at the frontier of the Inka empire in Mairana, Bolivia. It focuses on excavations at M-40, a habitational mound occupied over three periods, possibly spanning centuries. During this time, the multifunctional site was home to several different groups. In this palimpsest, to get at daily life and how it changed across time and space, it is critical to have a firm understanding of the chronology of M-40. To help clarify this timeline, GGR funds will defray the expenses of radiocarbon dating.
