Data in the Dark: Consolidating an International Observatory for the Night-time Economy (IONE)
Spring 2026 GPOD Recipient
Research by:
The emergence of an interdisciplinary field called Night Studies over the last 20 years has brought to light reflections on how urban governance is applied to the 24-hour cycle. Calls for a science of the night that also informs evidence-based nighttime policymaking emerged, with scholars and advocates looking at small and big data for answers. We will investigate how the definitions of “meaningful” or “valid” data are shaped by both the technologies used to collect, store, and represent it, as well as by who performs these tasks (communities or governments). This is a collaboration between researchers in the US, Canada and Mexico.
