Authoritarianism, Autocracy Inc., and Artificial Intelligence: Building a Counter Authoritarian Toolkit

The Democratic Futures Project Counter-Authoritarian Toolkit (AI-CAT) will support democratic advocates on how to respond to authoritarian use of AI to repress collective action. In particular, AI-CAT will work with CANVAS to develop GENE, an AI mentor designed specifically for pro-democracy movements. AI-CAT will also work with the Khmer Movement for Democracy to create an AI Civic Education and Trust Interface (AI-CET) designed to address misinformation during elections within authoritarian regimes. These tools expand DFP’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between academics and advocates about strategies being developed by authoritarians, research to enable an effective response, and tools to democratic futures.
