Born in the port cities of the Rio de la Plata in the late 19th century from the gatherings of immigrants and criollos, the milonga constitutes a unique lyric, music, and dance form. Milongas have become an important part of South American folklore, used to write songs which capture the conditions of life outside of the metropolises of the southern cone. This project seeks to better understand the history and formal qualities of the form as a means of offering the groundwork for a transcultural artistic project: writing milongas in English.
