Writing Tibetan Women: An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Literature, Modernity, and Gender in Tibet

Fall 2019 Grant Recipient

David Germano (Religious Studies)

Overcoming historical discrimination and contemporary disadvantages, a powerful blossoming of writings by Tibetan women has emerged over the past few decades. These works include deep reflections on their own Tibetan cultural heritage and society, as well as ongoing dialogs with Indian, Chinese, and Western cultures. Their voices provide a rich venue for understanding femininity and womanhood in a global, dynamic context but have received little attention at home, in exile, or abroad. This workshop adopts an innovative format to bring together writers, scholars, and for international conversations on their work in particular and Tibetan literature in general.
