Julide Etem (Media Studies)
This project is about films that are often categorized as educational, nontheatrical or nonfiction. Etem will contextualize these films within a significant body of film activities in Turkey and the United States in the 20th century. Etem is concerned with the following question: how does film provide ways of negotiating government relations and influencing public opinion about global issues? Through extensive primary research at archives and libraries in Turkey and the US, Film Diplomacy offers an alternative approach to conduct historiography and a counter-orientalist narrative of the past to empower marginalized communities.
