Encoding Maya Cosmovision: A Digital Variorum of the Popol Wuj

With this funding, we will produce two Mayan-language editions of the Popol Wuj for our new digital variorum. Ajpub’ Pablo García Ixmatá (Tz’utujil), Juana Cecelia Ixch’umiil García Méndez (Tz’utujil), Saqijix Candelaria Dominga López Ixcoy (K’iche’), Beatriz Par Sapón (K’iche’), and Aj Xol Héctor Rolando (Q’eqchi’) direct the K’iche’-language project in Guatemala, and Miguel Óscar Chan Dzul (Yukatek), Irma Yolanda Pomol Cahum (Yukatek), and Miriam Uitz May (Yukatek) lead the Yukatek-language work in México. UVA students Winnie Pérez Martínez (PhD, Spanish), Summer Shaw Chambers (MS, Data Science), and Aldo Barriente (BS, Computer Science & Linguistics) will assist co-PIs Bigelow and Alvarado with the variorum and a text map that connects the new Mayan works to editions already in the Multepal Project collection at UVa (https://github.com/Multepal).
